Taking the dramatics from Italy, the grandness from France and the harmony from Germany, Henry Purcell's distinctive Baroque style is especially seen in this piece. It became hugely popular after it was used as the Theme for Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, and has maintained its reputation as a fine work of the 17th Century ever since.
