Saint-Saens - Danse Macabre

Writer's picture: The Great StaveThe Great Stave

This haunting melodies, symbolism and instrumentation of Danse Macabre make it immediately recognisable. The piece starts with 12 notes played by the Harp, representing midnight, after which death enters through use of the Tritone - the "Devil's Interval". The use of the Gregorian Chant Dies Irae and the Xylophone in a similar melody to Fossils emphasises the true macabre of this tone poem.
